CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Lorna couldn’t help herself. She was interested in George all over again, which was as confusing as it was exhilarating. The thought of him set her heartbeat drumming, but then she remembered how dreadfully wrong everything had gone for them, and the battle she’d fought to forge a new life for herself.

‘I want to see him again, but I don’t want to get swept away,’ she confided in Sally as they sat together on the hearthrug in front of the fire in the sitting room. ‘For a start, I don’t know what his intentions are. I don’t know what mine are either, for that matter. What matters most is not to – well, not to attach too much importance to this. I want to hold myself back.’

‘Are you certain?’ Sally asked.

Lorna nodded. ‘When I met George in London, I threw myself into the relationship. George was everything I’d ever dreamed of. When he let me down…’

‘You must have felt crushed,’ said Sally.

‘I did,’ Lorna admitted.

‘Would it help to build up a social life that’s nothing to do with him?’ asked Sally. ‘Why don’t you come out dancing with Andrew and me on Saturday?’

‘It’s sweet of you to ask but I don’t want to play gooseberry.’

‘You wouldn’t be,’ Sally insisted. ‘Samuel and Betty are coming too, and we’re meeting up with my friend Deborah and a couple of other girls from the Town Hall, so you wouldn’t be the only single girl. Besides, there are many more girls than men these days. Do say you’ll come.’

Lorna felt drawn to the idea. It sounded like fun. When she had first come to live in Manchester, she hadn’t had any expectation of a real social life. It had taken a party at Star House to bid farewell to the munitions girls to make her start to see that there was rather more to pleasure than the highly organised, rule-bound social occasions that her mother had arranged for her.

The thought of Mummy made her wonder whether perhaps she ought to mention George in her next letter home, but it didn’t take her long to reject the idea. Since her last conversation with him, she’d thought a great deal about how her parents had behaved during her time in London. She hated to admit it but maybe they had rather chucked her at George, only she hadn’t realised it at the time because she was so besotted with him.

No, it would be better to say nothing to Mummy and Daddy for the time being. George had hit the right note when he’d said he hoped to get to know her without all the pressures of family and polite society. She wanted to get to know him too in the same way. Just the two of them, finding out about one another. Warmth cascaded through her. It would be like the first time all over again.
